Thermacork Manufacturing Process

Featured here is a behind-the-scenes look at how Thermacork is produced. Cork is shredded, pressed to the same density as oak, and then steam heated. This heating expands the cork and allows the naturally occurring waxy substance, suberin, to bind the material together. Thus, no added synthetic resins or binds are necessary, making it a 100% natural material that outcompetes any other insulator from a sustainability standpoint.

Plyboo Bamboo: A Win-Win Solution...for Millwork!

Being both rapidly renewable and unique for design makes bamboo a win-win solution for any wood application.

The left photo shows a 3/4'' 3-ply piece of plywood with a 1/8'' veneer on either side of a 1/2'' thick bamboo core. The faces are running in the opposite direction of the core; this cross-directional layout makes it a stronger and more stable panel. Also, because the edges are decorative, most people do not edge band it.

The right photo is solid single-ply plywood that is produced by adhering together the faces of bamboo in order to create an edged-band side profile. The surface shows the edge detail (notice the thin strips).

Agristrand Mankato, LLC has bought the assets of the last remaining domestic wheatboard plant. The new feed stock is soy stalk which looks the same as wheatboard. We find the quality to be very good and it's made in the USA. Very little energy goes into drying the stalk versus traditional wood based particle or fiber based sheet goods.
